Food Microbiology & Biotechnology

Purpose

This department Analyzes food samples for pathogenic microbes with the aim of ascertaining food safety. The lab also researches on useful microorganisms that could find use in industrial applications. The Biotechnology subunit conducts research on the use of biological processes, organisms and their products for the production of materials and services

Main Activities

The activities of the department include experimental and proficiency testing and validation of analytical methods and procedures, general maintenance and updating of stock cultures. The laboratory also made efforts to improve the management, and analytical procedures and safety measures in the laboratory. The laboratory staff participated on training programs and documentation to develop and implement Laboratory Quality Management Systems in line with ISO 17025, including the continued participation in the proficiency-testing programs coordinated by Bureau of Standard and the Swedish National Food Administration Further, the laboratory received samples from internal (in-house) and external clients for analysis of food and water samples for microbiological safety.
