    Dikgosi visited NFTRC

    National Food Technology Research Centre (NFTRC) this week hosted thirty three (33) members of Ntlo ya Dikgosi. The purpose of the visit was for Dikgosi to appreciate the mandate and operations of the institution.

     

    NFTRC Acting Managing Director Dr Kebakile shared the mandate of NFTRC, challenges and solutions faced by Botswana and Africa as a whole in the field of food security, malnutrition and lack of employment. He requested Dikgosi to support the institution by taking its shared services to the people and encourage them to buy Botswana products such as “Harvest Heaven”.

    In his welcome remarks, NFTRC Board Chairman Dr Keoagile Molapong said he believed that the visit will bring unity and a better understanding between NFTRC and Dikgosi as NFTRC focuses on indigenous knowledge of the food products researched.

    National Agro-Processing plant (NAPRO) Operations Manager, Mr Ramogoma Kaisara said NAPro creates awareness and advertised its products through shows and exhibitions, kgotla meetings, advertising in local print, social and electronic media.

    Kgosi Galeakanye Modise said that NFTRC has impressive food research knowledge; therefore it must consider approaching the Ministry of Basic Education for it to be included in the school syllabus to empower the future leaders of this country.

    Kgosi Chika III, Peter Johane encouraged the local food producers to look into their products shelf life because it’s one of the things that may make the consumers to be reluctant to buy local products.

    When giving vote of thanks Southern District Chairman, Mr Alec Seametso called on Botswana to start implementing research outputs for economic transformation. He called for legislation that empower local entrepreneurs.

    Dikgosi toured NFTRC laboratories, and had a chance to witness processing (canning seswaa) and water bottling.

    The event was graced by Representatives from Southern District Council, Kanye District Commission, Kanye Members of Parliament, Kanye Administrative Authority, Kanye Police Station, Ngwaketse Landboard and Kanye Sub Landboard.
